End of the Year Reflections

It's that time of the year again, TIME TO REFLECT!
This time: End of the Year

When you are in this class, you learn some excellent life skills you need in life. Some important things that I learned during this class was to be organized, time management, and responsibility. In order to do survive and pass this accelerated class, you need to be organized and find everything quick and easy. From my past experiences, Mrs. Larson will ask for papers back when you started. Use your resources and use them to organize by unit, class, or even importance. You also want to keep track of time. Homework is not easy most of the time, so that means you need more time to work on it. You do not have a TARDIS or a time machine, so use your time wisely. If it is a big blog like this, start it a week before it is due. There, you can finish the last paragraph the last day before it is due. You also want to be more responsible with your actions and work. If you forgot to do an assignment, you will be punished. Based on that, these are skills developed throughout the years, watching the little pink sheets fly everywhere to irresponsible students.

Mrs. Larson always refers back to guides handed out a month or two ago. So that means you will constantly look back to them and remember them for the rest of your life. There is this sheet called the TIQA format that was constantly being asked for. From that, you will never forget how to start your sentences, introduce a quote, and analyze it in a formal, professional way. Keeping papers like the TIQA format is very wise to do. In fact, you will remember this for the rest of your life.

Students help you out in some ways. They helped me out by coming to my table to explain the AoW. I do not have many friends in this class, which causes me to be alone most of the times during Galley Walk. Other people have other preferences. So, when I sit in my chair ready to present, I usually just watch others. Based of from loneliness, the nicest thing someone ever did for me was to come to my table and actually listen for what I have to say.

As a student, you make an impact on students throughout the year. I realized it now, but I helped out a student. I helped the student be more organized by writing down their homework. He always asked me, "What's for homework,?" Literally, every day in the middle of the night, he asked that question. Now that I told him to do what I do, he writes down his homework assignments. This made him more aware on events happening the next day and prepared for random call ups and gets a hand.

You improve on the little or big things constantly. It is either in writing, drawing, or playing an instrument. I improve on studying, which I am really proud of. We have a test to take every week, the classic, Vocabulary Test. There are new words every week that are not so familiar. You really need to study in order to get a good grade. Almost all the test I aced. I found out that colors and flashcards are perfect to study with. I will never forget the strategy I created myself. It will be useful again, I know it will.

Like every story, there are challenges the character must face. In my story, I have a struggle with word choice. As you read through, my words are very simple and sometimes plain. I always wanted to use words like Discombobulated, but I do not know where to put it. I always wanted to write a very descriptive blog, but I do not have the skill to. I guess I forgot most of the vocabulary words since I do not use them on a regular basis. I also have a fear of loosing accelerated classes since I do not use sophisticated words.

No matter what, you have an opinion on your best work. On my first post, I have only two sentences in one paragraph. It was not enough. Going back to the present, you see major, major changes in your writing. In fact, you might have a favorite. I am most proud of my narrative twist Karma. This gave me freedom and an idea on how my writing should be. I used words mike Madam, which was really fun to mess around. It also gave the story more silliness, but serious at the same time. Karma was one of my favorite blog/assignment I have ever done in ELA.

You read books no matter what day or time it is. You might do it for a challenge, or for fun. I started the first book of Harry Potter and fell in love with it instantly. I always had a thing for fantasy and witchcraft, which is why I decided to start now. When I was younger, I was often recommended to read these books, but I refused by the thickness of the book. As you read it, you loose count of the pages, which is the beauty of the book. The story is magical, the characters are well though out, its marvelous. From that, Harry Potter is my favorite book/series yet.

This is dedicated for the 6th Graders at Heritage Middle School. If you are selected to go to Mrs. Larson's class, NEVER DO THE WORK ON THE LAST DAY! This is one of the most important skill you need to develop in order to survive this class. You will not regret it, I promise. You will not believe how long you would stay up if you do it Thursday night. You also want to be organized. Keep your papers separate from each other. If you are selected, you want to practice this over the summer.

Of Mice and Men Movie

Prompts:
Of Mice and Men
Status: Done
(Spoilers)

A difference with the book and the movie is that the movie showed George in a train. What I think the movie added this is the adventure George had. George looks to be pushed around and all over the place looking for a job. Since it started and ended with the train, he was always fired or ran away. This tells us that George is poor and constantly looking for money. They added this to have more description of George. Since the book had more description, it did not need that scene like the movie did.

One of the many reasons why they chose Sharilynn Fenn as the Wife of Curley is because of the eye. The swampers complain that Curley's Wife had the eye, which is a flirt description. Giving that look to the guys really captures their attention and focus on her. So, when they were holding auditions, they were probably looking for a girl with a pretty eye and could act pretty okay, of course. In the book, it said, "... had the eye." If you think about it, and with Lennie's reaction, the Wife stares at the boys with a pretty eye, like I said before. So, that is why they chose Sharilynn Fenn to play the Wife of Curley.

The movie begins with a girl with a hole in her red dress. You also see a guy in a train. You see, in the book, it never said that Lennie ripped off part of the dress. In Of Mice and Men, it said that Lennie wanted to pet that girls dress because of the texture. It never said it ripped. In the movie, it represents Lennie's strength and foreshadow the conflicts later on. So, the reason why both the author and the director added this is to show why they are at the ranch. If they completely got rid of that, it would change the reason why they have that job and the plot itself.

So, the movie was not bad, it was entertaining. They added dialogue that was in the book, which makes you listen. Plus, with the setting and the looks of the characters enhances the reading experience by 75%. This just makes you understand the book more, which is neat. I would recommend this book to the crushed dreamers to show that the are not the only one. They should not be alone in this world, so they should read this book and see that they are not alone. They could realized their mistakes and fix them as well.

Of Mice and Men Conflict Blog

Of Mice and Men are full of conflicts. There are tension between two characters all the time. Some hate one another or just sad in general. Now that George and Lennie came in, it is no help. So, this blog is about the conflicts in the book. The main types of conflict are Man vs Man, Man vs Society, Man vs Self, and Man vs Nature.

One of the conflicts in the novella is about Curley hating tall people. Let's face it, Curley is short. What he does have that the workers do not have is a wife. He has a wife while Lennie, the tall guy, does not. He took out his anger on Lennie and caused a fight. Lennie was way stronger than him, but Lennie still refused to fight back. The effect from the fight caused Curley's hand to be wounded by being crushed by Lennie's hand. In the novella, it said, "... his closed fist was lost in Lennie's big hand. George ran down the room. 'Leggo of him, Lennie. Let go.'"This was taken place of the big fight between Lennie and Curley. As you can see, since they were making fun of Curley and Lennie was laughing too, he swung at Lennie instead of anyone else. If he did not hate tall people, his hand would not be crushed since he could have chosen someone else. Curley could have swung at Candy for making fun of his glove. George tried to stop for one reason and one reason only, which leads me to my next conflict.

George and Lennie needs money. The reason why they are at this job and live in a bunkhouse is to have enough money for their ranch. Their dreams lead them to this job and meet these new workers that could change their lives forever. Look at them now, they have friends that will help them on their journey and work for their future ranch. So, George needs to keep this job (so does Lennie) in order to get the money. Those are one of the many conflicts Of Mice and Men has to offer.

(P.S. All titles are italicized. The font makes it hard to see.)

Glitches

Ones and Zeros are my life
They fill the room with all their might.
My mind is filled with lines of code.
I swear I could just explode.

Google is a name
My future workplace
To code and make
Oh, the things I can create!

Tech is spreading,
no more sledding
all I know I could be shredding.

Dreams not always come true
which makes you blue
you can't see though
and what you do
is eat your stew
and bills are due
you life has flew
and what you do
is sit and hear the tick
of the clock that makes you fell like a stick
and watch the time go by.

No one wants that
even the guy in the hat
that says you're a rat
Doesn't know what you have inside.

The smallest voices could make an impact
but all you have to do is ignore
ignore the fact
that you are stacked
with all these words
that could make your life go splat

What they don't know
you are packed
with ideas
that could change technology in in the future.

Go to Google
Become what you want
run as far as you can
so that no one can catch you.

Of Mice and Men Blog

Prompt: Describe the atmosphere of the ranch and bunkhouse.
Why doesn't Curley's wife have a name?
Of Mice and Men
by John Steinbeck
Pages 38 - 107
Status: Almost halfway there

In class, we are reading a book called, "Of Mice and Men," written by John Steinbeck. This book is about two traveling migrant workers, George and Lennie, seeking a job for money. They had to drink dirty water and eat beans in order to live. They finally get a job and hope that it goes swell and get their pay. They convince Lennie by giving him the rabbits and letting him have a mouse after they get paid. Now, they hope that they do not screw this up.

George and Lennie's workplace is not the best, but it is all they can get. The bunkhouse has bugs in their beds, which makes it hard to sleep sometimes worrying if there are bugs on you. In the Novella, it says, "What the $&^% kind of bed you giving us, anyways? We don't want no pants rabbits." What this means is that George does not want to sleep with bugs. He hates the beds, so he complains. The bunkhouse and the ranch seems to be run by two people, Slim and the Boss. The boss's son does not seemed to be taken seriously around the workers and more respected towards Slim. Slim treats others with respect and with manners that made everyone follow his rules. Not to mention that he looks tough in all. The boss is the boss, it is self-explanatory.

One of the reasons why I think that Curley's wife does not have a name is to be incognito. Before I begin, they describe the wife with, "She had full rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up." She seems too good to be true. She has to be hiding something. Curley's wife had given people, "The Eye." What this means is that she his flirting with others just by looking. That gave me the red flag and focused on her. So, in my words, Curley's wife does not have a name because she didn't tell Curley or it is a fake name. Just in case the police comes, she has an alias so she will not be caught.

3rd Quarter Reflections

3rd quarter was a blast! I had a great time in Math, Science, surprisingly Social Studies, and especially ELA. I have learned a lot over the past few months. I believe it is time to look back at what I have done in the past.

Some of the biggest improvements in ELA were my reading speed. We were assigned a book to finish in a period of time. So, in my group, we had a schedule to follow, which was a lot to handle in my opinion. With a tight schedule at home, I was reading like a maniac. We ended up finishing the book a day early. For that, my reading speed increased dramatically. Not just that, I am able to finish books in a maximum of two weeks. I have to thank my teacher for this one. Thank you Mrs. Larson!
(Blog for Literature Circle, Click Here!)

We did a unit on poetry. Yes, poetry! This is not just any poetry unit, THE poetry unit. This was probably one of my all time favorite units discussed in class. I have learned a lot about different student's past and their feelings. Some poems are deep and some are enthusiastic. For me, the closest deep poem I wrote was probably the "Where I'm From" poem I did a while back. This had some deep thought about how my childhood went and how I came to be. This is not the one I am most proud of, though. I have a poem that I thought turned out great! The poem is "Another World." It was humorous and creative, as I say so myself. It gave me freedom of choice and has a wide variety of story plot. That poem is one of the many things I am proud of this quarter.

One of the most challenging part of 3rd Quarter is the blogs. Not just a blog like this one, a blog where you have so many expectations on you. For example, the final blog on the poetry unit was expected to be well written. Blogs like that could be time consuming and make you look for substitutes for some words. So, having a good grade on that blog could be challenging for me. For that, it is the most challenging part of 3rd Quarter.
(Final Poetry Blog, Click Here!)

Today is the final day of 3rd Quarter. Looking back can sometimes be depressing. The adventures and the tests taken are now all in the past. Now, it is time to calm down about school and excited for summer break. It is creeping on us slowly, but surely. Monday is a new beginning, new exploratory, new quarter, and new changes.

Literature Circle - Half Brother

EQ: How does the relationship between Ben and Zan affect Ben and Dad's Relationship?
Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel
Pages 375-375
Status: Finish

Throughout the book, I ask myself a question all the time. I wonder if Ben and Zan's relationship in the book Half Brother  by Kenneth Oppel affects the relationship with Ben and his dad. I finished the book not to long ago and seen pretty interesting changes too. Ben's dad, Richard, thought this was going to be easy and okay to let go of. Once Ben got used to the chimpanzee, Zan, he loved him too much, Ben could not let go. Once Richard announce the project is over in the late spring, Ben was devastated. His relationship was at steak at that moment. Ben fought Dad by attempting to push him to the ground, but Dad won. Ben got so mad that he actually stomped out of the house. Ben's love with Zan could question Richard's decisions about either family or project. Thanks to Zan, his relationship is worse than before. Later in the book, it heals for a specific event that I am not going to mention. All in all, Relationship between Father and Son could be affected by another person, or in this case, a monkey.

Perspective can change the way you look at a topic. You can read something such as a book from a perspective of a survivor of 9/11 that shows what is happening down below. If you read a book about 9/11, it  would talk about the attackers and the buildings. The survivor does not know where that airplane is from. They just ran and took cover possibly with their families. The general book would talk about the screaming and the cloud of dust roaming the streets. It all depends where you stand in the book or anything you are reading. If I take this into Half Brother, the Ranch in Ben's family is different than what the owner thinks about the place. Perspective is very important in almost anything. You never know if it might change the meaning or not.

Books, magazines, articles, and the news can interpret the same topic differently. Just like I said before, it is based on Perspective. I found an article talking about Chimps in labs, which connect to our story. In the book, it says, "'But even if they were,' he said, 'should we be torturing animals so we can heal humans? Is that fair?'" This quote from page 165 talks about labs they might possibly send Zan to. Ben does not like the idea of torture, just for selfish needs. Ben thinks about the labs as a slaughterhouse. Ben has some pretty negative look at these labs. Let's see what the article says. In the article, "Chimpanzees in Laboratories" from Peta.org, it says, "Those who made it to U.S. laboratories suffered terribly and died young." As you can see, when chimps go to these labs, they decrease their life spam. They basically die in the next year! This is much similar to the book. One thing that is different, the article gives the history and other information on these labs, while the book does not. That is how different sources with the same topic can have a different meaning.

Poetry Reflection

Before we started to do the poetry unit in class, everyone had a negative mood to it. They say it is confusing and boring. Now that we put our toes in the water, people just jumped in and enjoyed swimming. They love to write deep poem or even a hysterical poem! We have written tons of different types of poems, which brought out different emotions they normally do not present. We could even learn a thing or two by these poems and another side of someone's personality. To be honest, a poetry unit can really have an affect on you.

Poetry is one of the things you can not forget as a child. It would bring back memories on how school went, or even how your childhood was spent. Poetry is different for other people. Their past memories can change the poem overall! If you have good memories and a great childhood, most likely your poems would have a positive attitude on. For me, I have great memories with friends and families. For that, I create an up-beat tone in my poems. Right now, I can not forget the poems I created in the 6th Grade, 5th Grade, and more. Once I get older, I will remember the poems I created in Middle and Elementary School and what is in them. Reflecting on the poems, you can tell if your childhood was perfect, okay, or even horrible. For that reason, Poetry does play an important role in my life, and even to everyone!

As I said before, Poetry is affected by life experiences. If you just went to a Water-park and came home, you poem would most likely be happy. As you can see, poems are affected, but not always the good kind. If someone broke up with you or a different tragedy that occurred could cause the poem to be a gloomy, dark, and a deep tone to it. So, life experiences have a huge impact on poetry.

Structure could be one of the most important part in a poem. Maybe you want to make a poem about a bear in a shape if a bear, or pretty much anything! I chose a poem called, "Gingerbread Man" by an anonymous poet. If you read it, it is about a gingerbread man. If you step back and look at it for the second time, you see a gingerbread man shape full of words. This type of poetry is called Shape Poetry. The shape the poem takes should have a connection with the meaning. Also, the use of personification in this poem makes the poem more humorous and enjoyable to read.

An alternative to the Shape poem is a Letter Poem, which is what I created. I made a poem about French Toast shaped like an F. This shows clear respect and love to French Toast, which is the meaning to the poem. Also, just like the Gingerbread poem, giving it rhyme and personification adds more character and humor into the poem.

"Apple vs. FBI"

As we sit
and the fight goes on
the battle between Apple
and the FBI.

The news reports
about hacking the iPhones
so that the FBI
could track the bones.

Terror strikes in cities
calling out helpers
to shoot one another
including his member.

They call on cell phones.
So happens it's Apple's
To track down ISIS
so they can tackle.

In shock and horror
the battle continues
in popular cities
to fix this issue.

Phones are less safe
but easy for them
to hack the iPhone's
and kill their precious gems.

We made a dent in the Universe
like Steve Jobs said
ISIS is a bit threat
since they spread.

There is a crack in the Earth
where privacy is less
and phones scream out
Apple said yes.

You can hear Terror
talking and hacking phones
but the two sides
are in the Zone

The FBI wants unlimited guesses
to guess the code
but Apple is afraid
that everyone knows.

Apple may be teamed
with a big market
but now that they are
they are a big target.

This poem is brought to you by, "U.s. wants to peek inside iPhone but Apple holding up the shield of privacy."

"The Cat that was in a Hat" By Anthony B.

The Cat in the Hat,

Clumsy, Troubled, Fun, Fast

A character in a Dr. Seuss story.

Lover of Thing one, Thing Two, and a Unicycle

Who noticed big messes, unhappy children, and an angry goldfish

Who feels left out, worthless, depressed

Who learns to keep clean and solve problems

Who's fish said, "No! No! Make that cat go away! Tell that Cat in the Hat you do NOT to play."

Who used to think he leaves no trace, but now knows he can really leave a mark.

A major character in The Cat in the Hat

A book that can be hilarious.

Bronx - Character Development

In the book, "Bronx Masquerade," character changes throughout the story. For an example, Tyrone does not want to go to school. He thinks it is a joke. Along the courses of Open Mike Fridays, he learns to love school and poetry that really made a big impact on the rest of the school. Tyrone wanted to be a rapper. His poems are long and rhyme because of that. Yet again, things change. Tyrone thinks that almost everything is a joke, like school. As the book went on and students presented poems, he realized something. That something is the fact that everyone has some sort of story that is different from others and they DO matter. He started to have feelings for others and appreciated life. He was worried about his future in the beginning. Now, he "ain't" afraid of the outcome. He knows he has a bright future head of him.

Lets take Janelle for another example. She was worried about her weight and how people think of her. She knows she is fat and worries about it. One day, she just put it behind her. She is not worried anymore. Her eight year-old student she tutors told her she was beautiful. That moment, she didn't worry about her weight! Standing in front of the class reading a poem makes her forget about it. This was later on in the book. She hated the fact that she if fat in the beginning, but she changed overtime. She was also scared to go up since people know about her. They might judge her about the poem before reading it, which is tough to go through. She overcame it one she started to read. As you can see, it is possible for characters to change overtime in the book.

Its not just the characters that change themselves, they can be influenced by the setting! In the classroom, almost everyone feels safe to speak their minds and share their thoughts. Plus, where they came from, such as home, may impact their writing style in poems. They are in Bronx, mostly made up of African Americans. Characters judge each other by skin based on the town they live in. So, they might be enemies, or friends. When Open Mike Friday comes along, they put it behind them and act like it never happened. Setting is a big part of character that can really change their personality, so characters ARE influenced by the setting.

Found Poem

"Slave be Gone" By Anthony B
"Home? Yes, you can live again! So long, Mr. Engel. Someone else likes to have  a friend. You? Not much. I'd be home a few hours, B-Y-E."

As I read through my page, it sounded like a person wanting to go home. When it repeated the word home, I thought this person was kidnapped or something. So, when I brainstormed, I was going to make it about a slave finally going home with his family, which is why the picture shows two people nearly hugging. This poem has a message that there is always hope. You can be free, but maybe not today. Always have hope. That is what I am trying to get across.

The theme for this poem is Freedom. This slave that is running to home is finally free from the owner! I mean, this slave was captured for all these years and the slave is free to go and wander the world. So, this slave is happy to go and live with his family free from work. He doesn't have to be beaten up or abused in any way. For that reason, the theme of this poem is Freedom.

Spine Poem

"Back Again" By Anthony B
"Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, On the Moon, Bears on Wheels on a Roll, Old Hat New Hat, The Cat in the Hat, The Long Haul, Stick Dog, Hop on Pop, Fox in Sox, Play it again (Repeat)"

When I was choosing through the books to make the poem, I realized I could make it with books I used to read over, and over again. So, what this poem is about is that you can never be too old to read children books. For that reason, it says, "Play it again," which means to read it over, and over again. So, I picked the originals like Dr. Seuss and Disney Books. As you can tell, you might have read this when you were little. Again, this proves my point that you still want to read them again.

The theme of this poem is Coming of Age. You are never too old to read children books. Again, they might be your favorite books of all time. Reading the books again can bring you back when you were young. You can have fun by making a poem out of your favorite children books. For that, the theme is Coming to Age.

Bronx Perspectives - Take One 2/16/16

Prompt: Contrast different characters.
"Bronx Masquerade"
by Nikki Grimes
Pages 73-167

Mr. Ward's class is a class you haven't seen before. All students have different stories and childhood to tell. It seems pretty plain, but not for long. Mr. Ward started a new unit called, "Poetry." This unit caught the eye of one student. This student name was Wesley. Wesley shared a poem that inspired all the students to participate in an event called, "Open Mike Fridays." Now, Mr.Ward has creative poets in his classroom writing poems to share to the whole class, which makes them unique, not plain. This book is called, "Bronx Masquerade," by Nikki Grimes.

Students in Mr.Ward's class are all similar, but yet different. Lets take Chankara Troupe and Tyrone for an example. Chankara sister is being abused by her boyfriend, but her sister does not care. Chankara does not want to follow her sister footsteps so she fights back. That memory that she has can cause her poems different from others. Her poems are about girl power and how they can fight back. Tyrone, on the other hand, hates school and poetry,  but he does have a passion. Tyrone wants to be a rapper and a songwriter. This makes his poems rhyme and have a beat to them. Of course, people have an adversity to overcome. Tyrone's father died, which is tough for a son to come through this. That's not all of Tyrone. He likes to criticize the poems students make, which shows another side of Tyrone. Some similarities they share is the fact that they both ended up loving poetry. In fact, almost all the characters ended up loving poetry!

As you can see, characters can be different in many ways and a few similar traits between different characters. Or they can be the other way around. Nikki Grimes expressed the love of poetry by bringing different characters with many different memories to complete the thought of poetry.

Poetry Response

The poem I chose for today is, "I was Walking in a Circle" by Jack Prelutsky. In order for you to read this, I have to write it like this.

This poem is about this guy who is walking in a circle, who found a paper that said the exact same thing what he was thinking. It is one of the funny poems since it continues on, and on, and on, and on, and on. What this poem is about would make a whole lot of sense one you read the whole thing. This is just a poem with no meaning whatsoever. So, the reason why the author wrote this poem is poem is just to make someone laugh. If they are having a bad day, just get dizzy reading a funny poem written by Jack.

When I visualize this poem. I think of a simple clumsy man who wrote this poem, and dropped it on the floor. He looks far and wide until he found it while walking in a circle. I think this is how Jack Prelutsky got his idea. It is a pretty catchy poem if you memorized it. Thanks to that man, Jack has made one of my ll time favorite poems.

This poem has a connection to one specific type of writing, a Shel Silverstein poem. Jack has that humorous writing style just like the one Shel has. Their writing is similar, and sometimes does not make sense. Yet again, this is a kids poem. When reading this, it sounds like a Shel Silverstein poem, but it is just Jack's. This also relates to my life. I was really walking in a circle and noticed a piece a paper. I picked it up and realized it was a receipt. It was really funny since this poem is almost the exact thing that happened to me.

Quarter 2 Reflections

Prompt: Reflect on the 2nd Quarter.

People say that 7th Grade is a big change from learning experiences. You might have more homework to do, not enough sleep, or just fooling around in general. 2nd Quarter just ended and I have learned a lot, especially in English Language Arts. I feel like I have made most improvements on is studying. Studying for test weekly to be exact. Since I have a vocabulary test almost every week, I have learned new strategies on how to memorize them. This skill helps me study other test such as the Constitution that is coming up. For that reason, I have made improvements on tests as well in ELA.

One of the things that I am most proud of since the new year is my banned books research. Besides my grades, the banned books research was my favorite and my best. the video I worked on got good reviews and was out of the ordinary. I was really into the research that time and enjoyed the process of animation. That is one of the many I am most proud of since the new year.

One of the most challenging part if 2nd Quarter is Time Management. I believe I had this last quarter too. Since I am in many clubs and get out at school at 5, homework was a big struggle. Sometimes, I have to go to Boy Scouts, then an event, I hardly have time to do homework. So, what I have been doing to overcome this is by efficiency time based. I get rid of all distractions, such as a Phone, TV, and Siblings, and start working. Keep on looking at the time to hurry up the process and have little breaks. That case, I can finish my homework before the computer turns off at ten.

When you look back in the good old days, which was about 3 past months, you can see hard work, fun, and memories. we had an amazing time during our Christmas party and hard work in our Censorship Essay. Looking back really says, it's over. In other words, it has been good.

Book Talk

Powerless
By Matthew Cody
Page 148 - 277

The book I am currently reading is Powerless, by Matthew Cody. This takes place in a quite simple town named Noble Green. This town claims that it is the safest town on Earth. Daniel, being all moody, complains that it is too good to be true, but that is in only the beginning. Daniel shows adventurous, loyal, and determined type of character later in the book.

Surprisingly, the conflict is not from the main character, it is actually from other characters. Those characters are super-humans with unnatural abilities. Once they turn thirteen, their superpower is gone. These super-humans need Daniel's help to get to the bottom of this. For that, this book gives an exciting mood to add on to the story.

One of the themes the book gives is one of the inspiring ones, to be honest. The theme is, You don't need powers to be a hero. So, the author is trying to teach the reader that even though you don't have the ability to fly, or able to walk through walls, you can still help citizens no matter what. Daniel is the perfect example for this theme.

When I saw this book, I did not realize how amazing the book can be. I sort of judged the book by its cover in a way since I thought it was a comic book. Once you start reading, you instantly get interested and keep on going. It is different, yeah, it's different, which makes it unique, out of the ordinary, which is why I love this book.

What I remember the most about this book is when Daniel witnessed a superhero's power got lost. This made Daniel see this character in a different way and made me remember this part so much.

I recommend this book to someone who really does not believe in comic books. Why I feel they do not like comic books is because they can be too graphic, too easy, or just a quick story that can easily be read in one sit. This book is less of a comic book and more of a novel. That is why I recommend this book to those selected readers.

You should go and read this book. You will be surprised how this author brought the elements of a comic book into a real, chapter book. You can see how each character treats each other clearly and how they act (with each other). You should (also) go get this book because there are superheroes! If you are interested in superheroes and too old for the old comics, go ahead and get this book.
